Just went through the whole SASSA banking update process and honestly, it's not as complicated as people make it out to be, but you definitely need to know the right steps. Here's what actually works.

If you're on a permanent grant (old age, disability, child grant), you can't do this online—you have to go to your nearest SASSA office in person. Bring your original SA ID, a copy, and proof of your new bank account (bank statement from the last three months or a letter from the bank). They'll give you a form to fill out, verify everything, and send it to the bank. Takes about 21 working days to process, so if you need it sorted for next month's payment, submit before the 15th.

Now, if you're on the SRD grant, this is way easier—everything's online through the official SASSA SRD portal. You enter your ID number, they send you a secure link via SMS, and you update your details there. The tricky part is when you need to change your phone number for SRD—that's where people get confused. You go to the contact details page, enter your ID and Application ID, input your new number, and they'll send an OTP to verify it. Just make sure you're using the official SASSA website and not some random link floating around.

One thing nobody mentions: if you're doing a money transfer option on SRD, your new phone number has to be registered in your name (RICA-compliant). And remember, all accounts have to be solely in your name—no joint accounts or third-party stuff. If you hit any issues with the online portal, just call the helpline at 0800 60 10 11 or visit an office. Honestly, the in-person route is more reliable if you're dealing with something complicated.
