Just saw this story out of Guelph and it's honestly wild how far these scammers are taking things. A woman lost $14,000 to what looked like a legitimate crypto investment opportunity - except it was all deepfake MrBeast. Started with a social media ad, she paid $250 to get in, and then things just spiraled. Got a call from someone claiming to be MrBeast himself, convinced her to send $5,000 to a crypto wallet. Total damage was $14,000 before she realized what happened.
The thing that gets me is how easy it's become. AI voice cloning and deepfake videos have made this stupidly simple for fraudsters. MrBeast has been dealing with this for years - he called it out back in October 2023 when fake videos started circulating showing him offering free iPhones to anyone who sent him money. But it's clearly still a massive problem.
This isn't even isolated to MrBeast either. Earlier this year, there was a deepfake video of Prime Minister Mark Carney floating around YouTube ads pushing some crypto get-rich-quick scheme. They even fabricated articles to make it look legit. Guelph police are now warning people to be extremely skeptical of any celebrity endorsements for financial products, especially crypto.
What's wild is that Canada's federal government is actually trying to do something about it. Ottawa announced plans to ban crypto ATMs entirely back in late April after a CBC investigation showed how they've become a major vehicle for these scams. Victims were literally being told to insert cash into ATMs to buy crypto, which then gets sent to scammers with zero way to reverse it. Toronto Police's Financial Crimes Unit was pushing hard for this ban.
The combo of deepfakes, irreversible crypto transactions, and how convincing these setups have become makes recovery basically impossible once money's gone. If you get a call, email, or text asking you to take immediate action - especially involving crypto - that's your red flag. Canadian authorities are telling victims to contact local police and the Anti-Fraud Center immediately if this happens to them.
