The Trade Development Council has been established for 60 years, and a series of grand celebrations will be held, including a major event, the “Future 60 Forum,” on June 16. The forum will be hosted by current Chairman Ma Shiheng, with speakers including five former chairmen, in chronological order of their terms: Tang Lianru, Fung Kwok King, Ng Guangzheng, Su Ze-guang, and Lo Kang-wei.

Among them, Tang Lianru has been residing in the UK in recent years and rarely appears at public events in Hong Kong. Before the 1997 handover, she held several public positions, serving as the Chief Non-Official Member of the Executive Council from 1988 to 1995, and was the Chairwoman of the Trade Development Council from 1983 to 1991. Her participation in the forum to discuss Hong Kong’s economic and trade prospects over the next 60 years will attract attention.

Ma Shiheng actively promoted this forum, personally involved in its conception and preparation. He recently visited the UK to meet Tang Lianru in person, inviting her to attend this grand event. She also very much wanted to return to Hong Kong for the occasion, as the 60th anniversary is truly special. However, she had to take care of her husband, former Secretary for Justice Tang Mingzhi, and was unable to return in person, so she will witness the event via video link.

The other former chairmen of the Trade Development Council—Fung Kwok King, Ng Guangzheng, Su Ze-guang, and Lo Kang-wei—were also personally invited by Ma Shiheng. They are all well-known business figures and recipients of the Gold Bauhinia Star. In recent years, they have rarely expressed their views publicly. They will share their opinions on the future direction of Hong Kong’s economic and trade development at the forum. Currently, Hong Kong is at a pivotal point of economic revival, influenced by complex geopolitical factors. Their perspectives on the future are worth paying close attention to.
