Just realized a lot of people are struggling with updating their SASSA details, especially when trying to change banking details. The process is actually different depending on which grant you're getting, which catches most people off guard.

If you're on a permanent grant like old age or disability, you've got to go in person to your nearest SASSA office. No way around it. Bring your original ID, a copy, and proof of your new bank account (stamped bank statement not older than three months works). They'll give you a form to fill out, and then it takes up to 21 working days for the bank to verify everything. Pro tip: submit before the 15th of the month if you want it to kick in the next payment cycle, otherwise you're waiting another month.

Now if you're on the SRD grant, that's way easier because it's all online. You go to the official SASSA SRD portal, enter your ID number, and they send an SMS link to your registered phone. Click it, enter your new bank details, and you're done. Takes a few days to a couple weeks for verification. The important thing is the account has to be in your name only, no joint accounts or anything.

For updating your phone number, same deal—permanent grants need you to visit in person or call the helpline at 0800 60 10 11. But with SRD, you can do it online through their contact portal. You'll get an OTP sent to your new number to verify it's actually you. Heads up though, there are fake websites out there trying to scam people into changing their details, so always use the official links.

Basically, don't sleep on updating this stuff. If your banking information is outdated or your phone number changes and SASSA can't reach you, your payments get delayed. It's annoying but necessary, and honestly the online process for SRD is pretty straightforward once you know where to go.
