Just went through updating my SASSA details and honestly, it's not as straightforward as you'd think depending on which grant you're on. If you've got a permanent grant like old age or disability, you can't just do it online – you have to physically go to your nearest SASSA office and fill out the Payment Method Change Form. They need your ID, proof of your new bank account (bank statement not older than three months works), and they'll verify everything. Takes up to 21 working days for the bank to confirm, so timing matters – if you want it processed for next month's payment, you need to submit before the 15th.

Now if you're on the SRD grant, that's different. The whole thing is online through their portal, which is actually pretty convenient. You enter your ID number, they send you a secure link via SMS, and you update your banking details from there. Same rule applies though – the account has to be in your name, no joint accounts or anything like that.

Changing your phone number is just as important because that's how they send you payment notifications and verification codes. For SRD, there's a dedicated contact portal where you enter your ID and Application ID, then your new number, and they'll send you an OTP to confirm. If the online thing isn't working for you, just call the SASSA helpline at 0800 60 10 11 or visit an office in person. I've heard stories about fake websites trying to get people's info, so definitely stick to the official SASSA links only. Takes a bit of effort but getting your details sorted means no missed payments.
