Just had to sort out my SASSA banking details and learned a few things the hard way. Sharing this in case it helps someone else dealing with the same headache.

So here's the thing - if you're getting a permanent grant (old age, disability, child support), you literally cannot change your bank details online. You have to physically go to a SASSA office, fill out their Payment Method Change Form, and bring original ID plus proof of your new bank account. They want a stamped bank statement from the last 3 months or a letter from your bank. And get this - the account has to be 100% in your name, no joint accounts or anything like that. After they process it, the bank takes up to 21 working days to verify, so you need to submit before the 15th of the month if you want it to kick in next payment cycle.

But here's what actually surprised me - the SRD grant process is completely different. The R370 SRD account number change is actually handled online, which is way more convenient. You go to the official SASSA SRD portal, enter your ID number, and they send you a secure link via SMS. Then you just update your banking information through that link. The catch is your account still has to be in your name, and the verification takes a few days to a couple of weeks.

Phone number updates work differently too. For permanent grants, you either call the helpline (0800 60 10 11) or visit an office. But if you're changing your SRD phone number, there's an actual contact details portal where you enter your ID and application number, put in your new number, and they send an OTP to verify it. Way smoother than I expected.

One last thing - I kept seeing warnings about fake SASSA websites trying to scam people, especially with SRD stuff. Don't fall for it. Always use the official portal, and if you get stuck, just call the helpline or go in person. It takes longer but it's actually the safest option when dealing with your payment details.

Anyone else had to do this recently? The whole process felt unnecessarily complicated for the permanent grants, but at least the SRD account number change system is actually user-friendly.
