Just realized if you're getting SASSA grants, you need to keep your banking info current or you'll miss payments. Here's the thing though - the process is different depending on which grant you're on.

If you're on the SRD R370, changing your bank details is actually pretty straightforward. You go to the official SASSA SRD portal, enter your ID number, and they'll send you a secure link via SMS. Click it, add your new bank account info, and you're done. Takes a few days to a week for the bank to verify everything. The main catch: the account has to be registered in your name, no joint accounts or anything.

For permanent grants like old age or disability, it's more involved. You have to go in person to a SASSA office with your ID and proof of your new bank account (bank statement not older than 3 months works). They fill out the form, send it to the bank, and it can take up to 21 working days to process. If you want the change to happen next month, you need to submit before the 15th.

Phone number updates follow a similar split. For SRD, there's an online contact details page where you enter your ID and new number, then verify with an OTP they send you. For permanent grants, just call the helpline at 0800 60 10 11 or visit your local office.

Honestly, the SRD process to change bank details online is way smoother than going through the office, but make sure you're on the actual SASSA website - there's apparently a bunch of fake sites out there trying to scam people. Stick to the official portal and you'll be fine.
