Just realized a lot of people are struggling with updating their SASSA banking details, especially if you're on a permanent grant. Thought I'd share what I learned because the process is different depending on which grant you're getting.

If you're on permanent grants like old age or disability, you can't do this stuff online - you have to physically go to your nearest SASSA office. Bring your original ID, a copy, and proof of your new bank account (bank statement from the last 3 months or an official letter from the bank). They'll give you a form to fill out, process it, and send it to the bank for verification. This can take up to 21 working days, so if you want it sorted for next month's payment, submit before the 15th or you'll wait another cycle.

Now, if you're on the SRD grant (the R370), it's completely different - you can do everything online through the official SASSA SRD portal. You enter your ID number, they send you an SMS link, you click it and update your banking details from there. Takes a few days to weeks for the bank to verify. Way simpler than the in-person route.

For updating your cellphone number on SRD, use their contact details portal - you'll need your ID and application ID. Enter your new number, they'll send you an OTP to verify, and you're done. But heads up: there are fake SASSA websites out there trying to scam people, so always use the official links.

If the online stuff isn't working, just call the SASSA helpline at 0800 60 10 11 or visit an office in person. Sometimes that's actually faster than fighting with the portal anyway.
