Just realized a lot of people don't know how to properly update their SASSA grant details, especially when it comes to banking information. Saw someone complaining they missed a payment because they didn't update in time, so figured I'd share what actually works.

If you're on a permanent grant (old age, disability, child grant), you can't just do this online—you have to go in person to your nearest SASSA office. Bring your original ID, a copy, and proof of your new bank account. The bank statement needs to be recent (within three months) or an official letter from the bank. They'll fill out the Payment Method Change Form for you, but here's the thing: you need to submit it before the 15th of the month if you want it to take effect the next month. Otherwise it takes another cycle. The banking details update then goes to the bank for verification, which can take up to 21 working days.

For the SRD grant it's different—everything's online through the official SASSA SRD portal. You enter your ID number, they send you a secure link via SMS to your registered number, and you update your banking details from there. Just make sure the account is in your name only, no joint accounts. The verification still takes a few days to weeks though.

Changing your cellphone number is pretty straightforward for SRD—same portal, enter your ID and Application ID, put in the new number, and they send an OTP to verify. For permanent grants, you either call the helpline at 0800 60 10 11 or visit the office. One warning though: there are fake websites out there claiming to help with this stuff. Always use the official SASSA links. And if you're doing a money transfer option instead of bank payment, make sure your phone is RICA-registered in your name. It sounds like a lot but honestly, getting your banking details update sorted early saves a lot of headaches later.
