A netizen asked about HKTVmall’s discount details, and Wang Weiji personally responded, emphasizing that the 15% discount cost is entirely borne by HKTVmall, “completely without asking any merchants to share the burden.”
Wang Weiji explained that HKTVmall can sustain long-term discounts because the operating costs of online shopping platforms are much lower than traditional brick-and-mortar stores. Physical supermarkets’ rent and staffing costs do not decrease with declining sales, making it very difficult.
He bluntly said that the business model of Hong Kong supermarkets is outdated, with “expensive shop rents” passing high costs onto consumers. In the long run, it’s “unsustainable,” and combining “online shopping” with “convenience stores” can provide cheaper and faster grocery supplies.
Price war employees may face pay cuts?
Some netizens worry that the price war might lead to employee pay cuts. Wang Weiji responded, “Why would wages be cut?” He said the company adopts a low-margin, high-volume strategy, and with business growth, employees get annual raises and bonuses (poor performers are another matter).

JD subtly criticizes competitors as “stingy” on social media; JD Supermarket and Jabao also offer 20% off across the board
In recent years, JD, actively expanding in Hong Kong, posted on social media two days after launching its first promotion, indirectly criticizing competitors as “stingy,” and “taking action” by offering JD Supermarket under the JD App 20% off every day, with minimum spend discounts—20 RMB off on orders over 100 RMB—claiming “if you want cheap, then go all out.”
