【Hacker Attack】 Education platform Canvas hacked, affecting candidates preparing for CFA Data of 5 educational institutions including PolyU leaked, involving over 40k people
The Canvas platform used by multiple universities worldwide has recently been targeted by hackers ShinyHunters, affecting not only educational services for over 8,000 universities but also candidates taking the CFA exam. The CFA Institute has sent an email to candidates stating that access to Canvas has been temporarily suspended, but Instructure (NYSE: INST), the parent company of Canvas, has not yet announced when services will be restored. The next CFA exam is scheduled from May 12 to 18.
The CFA Institute stated that they are aware that the incident will impact candidates’ access to learning systems and will provide PDF or ePub versions of course materials as soon as possible. Candidates should monitor their emails for further updates. Any news will be posted on the CFA Institute website.
The CFA Institute also warned that user information, including names and email addresses, may have been leaked. Therefore, users are advised to be cautious of phishing emails and messages, and to change passwords associated with the CFA Institute systems. The CFA Institute uses Canvas as its official learning platform, providing exam course materials, practice questions, and mock exams.
Additionally, the Privacy Commissioner’s Office announced that by 6 p.m. on Friday (8th), it had received reports of data breaches from five local educational institutions, all involving hacking incidents on Canvas. The initial data involved personal information such as names and email addresses. The five institutions include Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Hong Kong Construction Industry Council, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, and Hong Kong Education City. Among them, PolyU initially reported approximately 42k students and staff affected, while the Hong Kong Construction Industry Council reported about 2,500 students and staff impacted.
