Just realized a lot of people are still confused about updating their SASSA details, especially when it comes to changing your bank account info. Let me break down what I've learned because honestly, the process is different depending on which grant you're getting.
If you're on the permanent grants (old age, disability, child support), you pretty much have to go to your nearest SASSA office in person. No shortcuts here. You'll need to fill out the Payment Method Change Form, bring your original ID and a copy, plus proof of your new bank account—a bank statement from the last three months or an official letter will do. One thing to remember: SASSA won't pay into joint accounts or anything in someone else's name, so make sure the account is solely yours. The whole verification process takes up to 21 working days, so if you want it to take effect next month, submit before the 15th.
Now, if you're on the SRD grant (the R370 relief), it's way easier because everything is online. You go to the official SASSA SRD portal, enter your ID number, and they'll send you a secure SMS link. Click it, enter your new bank details, and you're done. The verification takes a few days to weeks. Just make sure your phone number is registered in your name if you're using the cash send option.
For changing your phone number on permanent grants, you can try calling the helpline at 0800 60 10 11, but honestly, visiting an office might be faster. With SRD, there's a dedicated contact details page where you enter your ID and Application ID, then update your number. They'll send you an OTP to verify. One heads up though—be careful with unofficial websites trying to help you change your grant details. Stick to the official SASSA links only to keep your info safe.
