just found out there's actually a proper way to handle changing bank details for SASSA grants and it's different depending on which grant you're on. been seeing a lot of confusion about this so figured i'd share what i learned.

so if you're on a permanent grant (old age, disability, child grant), you can't just do it online - you have to physically go to your nearest SASSA office. they'll give you a Payment Method Change Form and you need to bring your ID, proof of your new bank account (bank statement or letter, nothing older than 3 months), and they'll verify everything. the whole rsd changing bank details process takes up to 21 working days after they send it to the bank. heads up though - if you submit after the 15th of the month, it won't take effect until the following cycle.

for the SRD R370 grant it's completely different and actually way easier. everything's online through the official SASSA SRD portal. you enter your ID number, they send you a secure link via SMS, and you update your banking details through that link. same rule applies though - account has to be in your name only, no joint accounts or anything. rsd changing bank details online takes a few days to a couple weeks for verification.

if you need to change your cellphone number for permanent grants, you're back to visiting an office or calling 0800 60 10 11. but for SRD grants, there's a dedicated contact portal where you can update it yourself - they'll send you an OTP to verify. just make sure you're using the official SASSA website and not some random link because there are fake sites out there trying to scam people.

the rsd changing bank details thing seems complicated but honestly once you know the steps it's pretty straightforward. just don't miss those deadlines and make sure whatever documents you bring are legit. anyone else had to go through this process recently?
