So here's the deal - if you're on a permanent grant like old age or disability, you have to go in person to your nearest SASSA office. They'll give you a Payment Method Change Form, and you need to bring your ID, proof of your new bank account (bank statement from the last three months works), and they'll verify everything on the spot. Takes up to 21 working days for the bank to confirm, and if you want it active next month, submit before the 15th or you're waiting another cycle.
Now if you're on the SRD grant, that's way easier because it's all online through the official srd sassa gov za portal. You just enter your ID number, they send you a secure link via SMS, and you update your banking details right there. Same rule though - account has to be in your name only, no joint or third-party accounts. The verification can take a few days to weeks depending on your bank.
For changing your phone number, permanent grant holders should call the helpline at 0800 60 10 or visit an office, but SRD users can do it through the contact details page on the gov za link. You'll get an OTP sent to confirm it's really you. Fair warning though - there are fake websites out there claiming they can change your grants, especially SRD numbers, so always use the official srd sassa gov za site. Honestly the safest move is always going direct to SASSA or using their official contact channels if you're unsure about anything.
