WHO: “Hondious” cruise ship cases involving hantavirus increase to 8 people
On May 6, local time, the World Health Organization said that the “Hondius” cruise ship has reported one additional case of hantavirus infection. As of May 6, a total of 8 cases had been found, and 3 of them were confirmed as hantavirus through laboratory testing. It was reported that the new patient is a Swiss male, a passenger on the “Hondius” cruise ship. After traveling with his wife from South America in late April, he returned to Switzerland. After symptoms appeared, he went to a hospital in Zurich, Switzerland for treatment and was put in isolation. The man replied to an email from the operator of the “Hondius” cruise ship, informing them of his health condition. The WHO said that the type of virus involved in this outbreak has been confirmed as Andes hantavirus by the South African National Institute for Communicable Diseases and the University Hospitals of Geneva in Switzerland. In previous hantavirus outbreaks, this type of virus has been reported to show limited human-to-human transmission. (CCTV News)
