Aave Unlocks rsETH

The freeze is over. Aave just reopened rsETH withdrawals across five major networks. A 26-day ordeal following the Lazarus Group exploit has entered its final chapter.

🔹 Where Withdrawals Are Live
Aave unpaused rsETH on Ethereum Core, Arbitrum, Base, Linea, and Mantle . Users can pull their funds. The bridge connecting Ethereum mainnet to Layer 2 networks is operational again after the first 25,000 rsETH recovery tranche successfully moved into the LayerZero OFT adapter .

🔹 The Recovery By The Numbers
The exploit drained roughly $292 million in April . The DeFi United coalition, a coordinated group including Aave, Kelp DAO, and multiple protocols, raised approximately 137,000 ETH, worth near $317 million at current prices, to restore backing . Eight attacker-linked positions on Aave V3 were liquidated on May 6 .

🔹 What Happens Next
Deposits and normal exchange rate updates return within 48 hours of the first tranche landing . Staking rewards accrued during the entire suspension period will be distributed to all rsETH holders. Kelp confirmed that remaining recovery tranches from the Aave Recovery Guardian will flow into the lockbox over the next two weeks, totaling roughly 117,132 rsETH worth approximately $278 million .

🔹 Security Got Hardened
The bridge now runs on a completely overhauled security model. LayerZero verification requirements increased from a single attestor to four independent attestors. Block confirmation thresholds lifted from 42 to 64. All Layer 2 to Layer 2 bridging routes were deprecated. BailSec completed the security audit . Kelp is also migrating cross-chain infrastructure from LayerZero to Chainlink's Cross-Chain Interoperability Protocol, adding another security layer.

🔹 The Legal Battle Behind The Recovery
A federal judge cleared the path. Judge Margaret Garnett authorized Arbitrum DAO to transfer frozen ETH to Aave LLC via an onchain governance vote. The ruling preserved a restraining notice previously filed by terrorism judgment creditors, who argued the Lazarus Group links justified their claim, while allowing the recovery to proceed . The 30,765 ETH worth roughly $72 million recovered from the attacker currently sits in an Aave-controlled wallet pending further court authorization .

Bottom Line
rsETH withdrawals are live across five chains. The bridge is back open with four independent verifiers instead of one. Block confirmations doubled. DeFi United raised $317 million to restore backing. Staking rewards accrued during the freeze get distributed to holders. A federal judge cleared the legal path. The Lazarus Group drained funds. The ecosystem coordinated, liquidated, and recovered. A 26-day exploit-to-restoration timeline sets a new benchmark for DeFi incident response.

Friends, does this rapid recovery increase your confidence in DeFi resilience, or does the centralized legal intervention raise concerns?
