Colombia's Iron Wall—— Two Clean Sheets Are No Fluke
What gives Colombia the confidence to go toe-to-toe with Portugal? The answer lies in two words: defense.
In two group stage matches, Colombia conceded only one goal. In the opening round, they beat Uzbekistan 3-1, and in the second round, they defeated DR Congo 1-0. In their last 10 official matches, they have allowed less than one goal per game on average, with five clean sheets. The defensive line led by Davinson Sánchez has been called "one of the most solid defenses of this World Cup."
Colombia's defense does not rely on sheer numbers but on discipline and system. In the 4-2-3-1 formation, the double pivot covers an extremely wide area, the defensive line compresses tightly, and they give opponents no space to penetrate. Lerma's interceptions in midfield are outstanding, and Sánchez's command and organization at the back serve as the anchor.
Against Portugal, Colombia's tactics are very clear: sit deep, surrender possession, and look for transition attacks. Portugal likes to keep the ball, but Colombia simply won't compete for it—you keep the ball, we hold our shape. When you get tired, frustrated, and leave gaps behind your defense, Díaz and James Rodríguez will strike with lethal counterattacks.
In Portugal's first match against DR Congo, they had 75% possession but only managed one shot on target. Colombia's defense is several levels above DR Congo's. Can Portugal tear through this defense with their passing game? It will be extremely difficult.
