First time in 24 years! Korea Football Association officially cancels airport pickup and welcome ceremony

The Korea Football Association officially announced that the South Korean men's national football team, which has been eliminated from the World Cup, will return directly to the country on the 30th, and the Korea Football Association will not hold an airport pickup or welcome ceremony for the team.

Currently, the World Cup group stage has come to an end. The South Korean men's team, despite being placed in a relatively weak group, still failed to advance. They finished 3rd in the group with 1 win, 2 losses, and 3 points.

After three days of agonizing waiting, they were ultimately confirmed as the 10th place among the 12 third-placed teams in the groups, missing out on the knockout stage. Due to the World Cup expansion to 48 teams, the South Korean men's team, which failed to make the top 32, has set a record for the worst performance in the team's World Cup history.

After being eliminated from the World Cup, South Korean head coach Hong Myung-bo will lead the national team back to the country via Incheon International Airport on the morning of the 30th. Returning with him are eight players: Jo Hyeon-woo, Kim Min-jae, Hwang In-beom, Hwang Hee-chan, Paik Seung-ho, Kim Moon-hwan, Lee Kang-in, and Seol Young-woo.

Captain Son Heung-min and other players will arrange their own travel schedules and return to South Korea in batches, with all expected to be back in the country by July 1 at the latest.

The Korea Football Association has clearly stated: "There will be no separate welcome ceremony." This is the first time in nearly 24 years, since the 2002 Korea-Japan World Cup, that the South Korean men's national team has returned from an overseas World Cup without an airport welcome ceremony.

It is worth noting that even in 2014, when the team's performance was poor, the Korea Football Association still held a welcome ceremony. Clearly, this time the Korea Football Association is truly disappointed, even angry, with the national team's performance in the World Cup.

Notably, in 2018, after the South Korean men's team was eliminated from the World Cup group stage, they were greeted with eggs thrown at them upon returning home. This time, with an even worse performance, they are likely to face even more unfriendly treatment from their own fans.

If this were in the East, not only would there be crazy airport pickups and welcome ceremonies, but reports praising them as "honorable defeat" or "historic breakthrough" would already be in the works!
