#OpenAIGPT5.6 OpenAI Drops GPT-5.6: Sol Dominates, But Only 20 Partners Get Access
OpenAI just released GPT-5.6, and it's a beast. But here's the twist — almost nobody can use it yet. The new family includes three models: Sol (flagship), Terra (balanced), and Luna (lightweight). Sol set a new state-of-the-art score of 91.9% on Terminal-Bench 2.1 . That officially beats Anthropic's Claude Mythos 5 at 88.0%. Even without the "ultra" mode, Sol scores 88.8%—which alone would still beat both Mythos 5 and Fable 5 . And it does this using about one-third of the output tokens that Anthropic's models consume . Lower cost, better results.
The efficiency is the real story. Sol introduces two new reasoning modes. Max Reasoning pushes the model to spend more time on hard problems. Ultra mode actually splits complex tasks across multiple autonomous agents working in parallel — and it was this mode that hit that 91.9% score . It's not just a smarter model. It's a model that can build a team around itself.
Pricing is aggressive. Sol holds flat vs. GPT-5.5 at $5 input / $30 output per million tokens . Terra is roughly half that, and Luna drops to about one-fifth. Meanwhile, Anthropic's Claude Mythos 5 and Fable 5 are priced around $10/$50—double Sol's rate .
The catch: It's effectively US-only for now. Due to the Trump administration's AI executive order, GPT-5.6 is limited to about 20 approved partners . This follows the earlier restriction and subsequent partial lifting of restrictions on Anthropic's Fable 5 and Mythos 5 . OpenAI CEO Sam Altman called this a "strange moment" with no real federal regulatory framework, and made clear this "is not our preferred long term model" .
For crypto and Web3 builders, this matters. Sol's ultra mode could accelerate everything from smart contract auditing to DeFi risk modeling. But with access so tightly controlled, the real question is who gets to play with the new toys first.
