World Cup Upset: Germany Loses 3-4 on Penalties, Eliminated Before Round of 16, Setting Two Disgraceful Records
At 4:30 AM on June 30, in the World Cup Round of 16 match between Germany and Paraguay, the score was 1-1 after 120 minutes, and Germany lost 4-3 in the penalty shootout, suffering a shocking elimination! Germany set two disgraceful records: for the third consecutive World Cup, Germany failed to reach the Round of 16; this is also the first time in German football history that they lost a World Cup penalty shootout.
In terms of world rankings, Germany is 10th, Paraguay is 41st. In World Cup history, the two teams have met once before, in the Round of 16 in 2002, where Germany eliminated Paraguay 1-0, with Neuville scoring the only goal.
Germany switched to a 4-4-2 formation, with Undav and Havertz partnering up front, Wirtz and Sané on the wings, and Pavlović and Nmecha as the double pivot. For Paraguay, Ávalos and Enciso formed the strike partnership.
Germany had the upper hand, but Paraguay scored first. In the 42nd minute, Paraguay broke the deadlock:
It was a set piece for Paraguay, leading to a second-phase attack. Galarza crossed from the right, and Enciso headed the ball home, giving Paraguay a 1-0 lead!
At halftime, Germany trailed 0-1. After the break, in the 54th minute, Germany equalized:
Wirtz crossed from the left, Havertz flicked his header, and the ball flew into the far corner, bringing the score to 1-1!
At the end of 90 minutes, the score was 1-1, leading to extra time, where a huge controversy arose:
In the 102nd minute, German center-back Jonathan Tah scored a goal. VAR intervened, ruling the goal invalid because Anton had fouled the Paraguayan goalkeeper. This decision sparked widespread debate, with many believing Anton did not commit a foul and Tah's goal should have stood.
After 120 minutes, the two sides remained deadlocked, and the match went to a cruel penalty shootout. This was the first extra time and penalty shootout of the World Cup.
It was Germany's fifth penalty shootout in World Cup history. In the previous four penalty shootouts, Germany had won all, occurring in the 1982 semi-final, the 1986 quarter-final, the 1990 semi-final, and the 2006 quarter-final.
Germany took the first penalty. Havertz stepped up from 12 yards. The Arsenal striker shot with his left foot towards the center, but Paraguay goalkeeper Hill blocked it with his right hand! Paraguay's Mauricio scored into the corner, putting Germany 2-1 down on aggregate.
In the second round, Kimmich took the kick and slotted his right-footed shot into the corner; Gustavo Gómez calmly chipped past Neuer, leaving Germany trailing 3-2 on aggregate.
In the third round, Musiala shot into the bottom left corner; Paraguay goalkeeper Hill guessed the right direction but couldn't stop the ball from going in; Paraguay's Galarza easily scored, making the aggregate 4-3 for Paraguay.
In the fourth round, Woltemade's penalty was saved! Paraguay's Sanabria also missed his penalty! The aggregate remained 4-3 for Paraguay.
In the fifth round, Amiri scored, Balbuena's penalty was saved, making it 3-3 in penalties and 4-4 on aggregate!
In the sixth round, Tah's penalty went over the bar! Canalès scored, ending the match, with Paraguay advancing 5-4 on aggregate!
Penalty shootout 4-3, aggregate 5-4, Paraguay advances to the Round of 16, Germany is eliminated! This is definitely the biggest upset of the World Cup.
