Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has unveiled "Lean Ethereum," a comprehensive multi-year roadmap that he describes as the network's third major iteration, comparable in scale to the 2022 Merge. The ambitious plan, revealed on July 4, 2026, outlines a three-to-four year overhaul touching nearly every layer of the protocol with quantum resistance, privacy, and scalability as top priorities.

The Vision: Simplification, Security, and Privacy

Developed alongside Ethereum Foundation researcher Justin Drake, the Lean Ethereum roadmap aims to address three core challenges simultaneously: simplification, privacy, and quantum resistance. Buterin emphasized that "quantum safety has shifted up a LOT in priority," noting that finalizing quantum-safe solutions for "blobs" has become urgent. The plan includes replacing quantum-vulnerable components with recursive STARK-based verification mechanisms and targeting full implementation of post-quantum cryptographic signatures by 2029.

Privacy has been elevated from an afterthought to a "first-class goal," integrated into core protocol design decisions including the mempool and state tree. This represents a fundamental shift from Ethereum's historical approach where privacy was largely handled at the application layer.

Key Technical Upgrades on the Horizon

The roadmap introduces sweeping changes across all major protocol components:

Lean Consensus (Beacon Chain 2.0): One- or two-round finality for sub-second confirmation times, replacing BLS aggregate signatures with hash-based signatures, and decoupling liveness from finality.

Lean Data (Blobs 2.0): Post-quantum cryptography for data availability, granular blob sizing, and continued expansion of blob capacity to support Layer-2 growth.

Lean Execution (EVM 2.0): A profound shift from transaction re-execution to recursive STARK-based verification, where nodes verify a single proof rather than re-running every transaction. Multidimensional gas pricing would independently price compute, storage, and data costs.

Perhaps most ambitiously, Buterin floated moving beyond the Ethereum Virtual Machine entirely toward alternatives like RISC-V or a custom architecture called leanISA, with the EVM eventually serving primarily as a compiler target for backward compatibility.

A New State Architecture for 2030

The roadmap projects Ethereum supporting approximately 2 TB of present-day dynamic state alongside 100 TB of a newer, more scalable state design by 2030. This new state architecture is optimized for ERC-20 tokens, NFTs, and many DeFi applications, while complex protocols like DEXs and order books remain on the existing model. Migration would be optional but could reduce gas fees by more than ten times for certain applications.

Near-Term Implementation

The Lean Ethereum vision begins with the "Glamsterdam" upgrade slated for late 2026, which will include gas limit increases, ePBS, and block-building changes. The roadmap outlines seven distinct protocol upgrades through 2029, with incremental milestones rather than a single high-stakes deadline. Throughput targets are ambitious: roughly 10,000 transactions per second on Layer 1 and scaling to approximately 1 million TPS across Layer 2 solutions.

Skepticism and Challenges

Not everyone is convinced the 3-4 year timeline is realistic. Dankrad Feist praised the vision but argued AI could help developers ship upgrades within a year. Crypto analyst Ignas Fiodorovas pointed to the Ethereum Foundation's history of missed deadlines as reason for caution and noted that improved ETH tokenomics was conspicuously absent from the roadmap.

The announcement comes during a turbulent period for the Ethereum ecosystem. The Ethereum Foundation laid off approximately 20% of its staff in June 2026 as part of a 40% budget reduction, and several prominent protocol contributors recently departed. This leaner structure aligns thematically with the "Lean Ethereum" vision but raises questions about execution capacity.

For developers, the message is clear: Ethereum is not standing still.
