BitMine Makes a Strategic Move: Simultaneous Purchase of 7,430 ETH and Buyback of 5.5 Million Shares ✨
Public mining and staking giant BitMine made a two-pronged move in capital utilization last week. While adding 7,430 ETH to its treasury, it also repurchased approximately 5.5 million of its own shares. The average price was $15.62, total expenditure was around $86 million, and this transaction was conducted within its previously authorized $4 billion buyback program.
As of July 19th, total ETH holdings reached 5,777,468. This figure represents approximately 4.8% of the circulating ETH supply. The company is now only 4% away from its self-imposed 5% Alchemy target, with 96% of the goal already achieved. This marks the 55th consecutive week of purchases since the launch of its ETH treasury strategy on June 30, 2025. However, last week's 7,430 ETH stood out as one of the smallest weekly accumulations of the year.
🔹 Weekly addition of 7,430 ETH, approximately $14 million
🔹 5.5 million share buybacks in the same week, averaging $15.6156 and spending approximately $86 million
🔹 Total ETH of 5.777 million, 4.8% of supply
🔹 96% of Alchemy's 5 goals completed
🔹 55 consecutive weeks of uninterrupted ETH purchases
Why the Slowdown?
Chairman Tom Lee explained the slowdown as a deliberate balancing act. Lee stated that they remain fully committed to their accumulation strategy, but have entered a phase where share buybacks offer attractive value, and the capital allocation has evolved to maximize shareholder return.
This move also aligns with a growing trend among crypto-native companies. An approach that simultaneously implements traditional shareholder-friendly steps while aggressively expanding treasury holdings and keeping the share price undervalued.
Transformation into a Staking Giant
BitMine has approximately $11.5 billion in total assets. This includes 207 Bitcoins, $180 million in Beast Industries shares, $58 million in Eightco Holdings shares, and $385 million in cash and securities.
On the ETH side, approximately 85% of assets, or 4.917 million ETH, are staked. This position is estimated to generate approximately $247 million in annual staking returns. This makes BitMine one of the largest institutional stakers in the Ethereum ecosystem. As of May, staking and verification operations account for 98% of total quarterly revenue. In short, the company has transformed into a staking giant, generating more returns than mining.
🔹 Total assets: $11.5 billion
🔹 Staking ETH: 4.917 million, estimated annual yield: $247 million
🔹 98% of revenue comes from staking and verification
What it Means for the Market
BitMine controls almost one in every 20 ETH. This means significant weight on staking governance and network security. The $86 million buyback is read as a clear signal that management sees its own stake as undervalued and aims to balance the stake price amid crypto volatility. In the long term, the sustainability of the model depends on the continuation of Ethereum dominance and the staking reward economy.
The question of what's next is critical. The 5% Alchemy target is only a few weeks away from the symbolic threshold. If capital continues to shift towards buybacks, the target may be slightly delayed; if it accelerates, the historic threshold will be surpassed very soon. One thing is clear: BitMine is no longer just a miner; it has become a case study at the intersection of crypto accumulation, staking income, and traditional capital market engineering.
