KOSPI Dropped 9% in a Single Session. The Memory Trade Just Hit a Wall
South Korea’s KOSPI index dropped 9% on July 28 and went below 6,200 for the time since April. The drop was so big that the Korea Exchange turned on both the sell-side sidecar and the circuit breaker stopping program sell orders for 20 minutes. This was not a day when all the markets were pulling back. It was a move against the companies that are at the center of the global memory and AI hardware supply chain.
Where the Damage Concentrated
Chip stocks took the hit. SK Hynix dropped than 12%. Samsung Electronics went down than 10%. The selling was not in Korea. In the U.S. The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index went down more than 2% with SanDisk down 11% and Nvidia down 5%. The thing that connected everything was memory.
The Trigger That Lined Up the Selling
CXMT’s entry in China seems to have been the reason that several worries came together in the day. The market was already talking about how much money would come from big AI infrastructure spending and whether memory prices were near a peak. The coming of a Chinese DRAM producer added another worry: more supply that could push down the long-standing memory chip oligopoly. When those three ideas came together the result was a drop in the value of the companies most connected to DRAM and high-bandwidth memory.
What the Circuit Breaker Tells Us
The fact that the exchange had to stop program selling for 20 minutes shows how one-sided the orders became. Money left the market selling got faster. The automatic protections came into play. That pattern is usually for moves that're way beyond normal changes. A 9% drop in the index with double-digit losses in the chip companies met that level in one day.
Closing View
The KOSPI going below 6,200. The weak showing in U.S. Semiconductor companies suggest that the market is starting to value the memory cycle differently. The CXMT listing did not cause the worries about AI returns or about memory prices peaking. It gave those worries a clear supply-side focus. Whether this day was a short shock or the start of a longer adjustment depends on how memory prices and AI spending data change from now on.
For now the movement, in prices is clear. The memory trade that had been a part of the AI infrastructure story took a strong hit in one day and the Korean market took the biggest part of the change.
This is my understanding of the price movement and the reasons given. It is not a suggestion.
