On April 29, Bloomberg ETF analyst Eric Balchunas stated that it may be time to completely retire the saying ‘Sell in May.’ This strategy originated from the 19th-century practice of wealthy Londoners leaving the trading market for the summer, but it is no longer applicable in today’s 24/7 algorithm-driven markets. Data shows that the S&P 500 ETF (SPY) has risen in 25 of the last 33 ‘May to October’ periods, with only 2022 experiencing a decline in nearly the last 10 years.
