Claude helps recover 5 Bitcoins, post goes viral! But cybersecurity experts: this story has two major blind spots
Netizens used the AI model Claude to recover a wallet sealed for eleven years, bringing five bitcoins back to life. Although the AI did not crack the password, it helped with digital forensics and filtered key evidence from a massive volume of files to complete the recovery.
For many veteran crypto users, losing the mnemonic phrase and watching millions of dollars disappear is a pain they can’t shake. However, a recently viral post on the social platform X played out an almost movie-like reversal. One user claimed that with the help of the AI model Claude, they successfully recovered Bitcoin worth $400k that had been sealed for nearly 9 years.
Posting under the alias “Cprkrn,” the user exclaimed, “Oh my God—Claude actually really did it!” In the post, they not only tagged the developer Anthropic and CEO Dario Amodei, but also included an old post from August 2023, proving that even before then, they had been trying to crack a wallet that had been “deeply locked” since 2015.
On-chain data also confirmed that the Bitcoin address beginning with “14VJyS” had indeed been completely inactive for 9 years, until recently when it was finally brought back into view and successfully transferred out 5 bitcoins.
The thread quickly attracted more than 6 million views, sparking heated discussion among netizens: Can large language models truly help with tasks like handling encrypted files and recovering forgotten passwords?
However, on closer inspection of the screenshots they shared, there is actually no evidence showing that Claude directly “hacked” Bitcoin’s seemingly unbreakable cryptographic defenses. Instead, AI acted more like a powerful digital assistant—helping users sort through the tedious process of encrypted file and password recovery.
According to the description in the post, Cprkrn had repeatedly tried using btcrecover and Hashcat (two professional software tools commonly used by cybersecurity professionals for brute-force cracking or testing passwords for encrypted data) to unlock the wallet, but it was always in vain. Only at the end did he feed a huge number of files from an old university computer into Claude for analysis. Unexpectedly, the AI successfully matched a wallet file associated with the mnemonic phrase on his old laptop.
“This wallet has been locked for over 11 years, just because back then I was high, my mind was unclear, and I changed the password,” he joked. After AI found the key file, the mnemonic phrase successfully unlocked the wallet. “And the way it got unlocked—turns out it was an obvious flaw. It’s just too funny.”
Even though the individual praised AI’s performance, cybersecurity experts specializing in wallet recovery pointed out the blind spot: during the entire unlocking process, how much of the credit can truly be attributed to Claude? After all, the user already had the wallet files, the mnemonic phrase, and the historical information required to rebuild the password. One cybersecurity expert said:
What Claude is really doing is likely sifting through massive amounts of messy historical data, and finding clues related to older wallet credentials or password formats. Rather than ‘cracking the password,’ it’s more like ‘digital forensics and data classification.’
This incident drew major market attention because Anthropic only launched the “Claude Mythos” model last month, positioning it around high-end security. The new model also boasts that it can accurately identify software vulnerabilities and automatically complete advanced cybersecurity protection tasks—leading outsiders to imagine Claude’s ability to handle complex analysis.
However, this “AI myth” was heavily mocked by a number of rational users on the Reddit forums. They believed the viral post exaggerated AI’s actual contribution in the recovery process. One user commented:
Claude didn’t do anything groundbreaking at all—it just helped him “search” the files. This sensational, vague kind of description only makes gullible people think AI has achieved some great feat.
Another user pointed out: “Now you understand why the general public loves AI so much, right? This isn’t some technology revolution—it just perfectly caters to human laziness.”
In any case, the post did succeed in drawing global attention and once again put the intersection of AI and cryptocurrency in the spotlight. Still, the truth may be far less sci-fi than the headline suggests.
