Just realized a lot of people don't know how to properly update their SASSA banking details and it's causing payment delays. Let me break down what actually works because the process is different depending on which grant you're on.

If you're getting a permanent grant (old age, disability, child grant), you can't just do this online - you have to go to the SASSA office in person. Bring your ID, proof of your new bank account (a recent bank statement works), and they'll give you a form to fill out. The tricky part is the deadline - you need to submit it before the 15th of the month if you want it to take effect the next month. After you submit, give it about 21 working days for the bank verification. Also, the account has to be in your name only, no joint accounts or third-party stuff.

But if you're on the SRD grant (the R370 one), this is way easier because the whole SASSA online application and banking details update system is electronic. You go to the SRD portal, enter your ID number, they send you an SMS link, and you update your bank account through that secure page. Takes a few days to a couple weeks to verify. Same rule though - account must be in your name.

For changing your phone number, it depends on your grant type. Permanent grants need a visit to the office or you can call the helpline at 0800 60 10 11. For SRD, use the online contact portal - they'll send you an OTP to verify the new number. Fair warning though, there are fake websites out there trying to scam people with grant updates, so always use the official SASSA links.

The key thing is making sure your payment details stay current because delays are annoying and honestly preventable. Don't wait until the last minute to sort this out.
