【Block Rhythm】A massive data breach incident has drawn attention. According to the latest report from security firm Malwarebytes, a report on January 11 revealed a serious security incident at Instagram — sensitive information of approximately 17.5 million users was exposed.

The scope of leaked information is extensive, including usernames, email addresses, phone numbers, and even physical addresses and other critical data. More concerning is that this data has been packaged and sold on the dark web, likely to be used by criminals for phishing attacks or account takeovers.

Malwarebytes pointed out that this incident may have originated from an API exposure vulnerability that occurred on Instagram in 2024. Affected users have been receiving password reset reminder emails in succession — a clear signal that a breach has occurred. As of now, Meta’s official channels have not released any formal statement or remedial plan.

For Web3 users, this incident deserves particular vigilance. Many people simultaneously use email addresses to manage multiple exchange accounts. Once email information is compromised, hackers can attempt to takeover your trading accounts through “credential stuffing.” Security experts’ recommendations are straightforward: immediately enable two-factor authentication (2FA) and update passwords. If you have registered on multiple platforms using the same email address, it is recommended to check each one and strengthen your security measures.
