Traditional finance enters the digital asset era: Citibank and Swift successfully demonstrate seamless interoperability between fiat currency and cryptocurrencies

The cross-border payment infrastructure giant Swift has partnered with global financial institution Citibank to solve a long-standing industry challenge—the establishment of real-time settlement channels between fiat currencies and digital assets. The recent pilot project successfully demonstrated for the first time that traditional financial systems and distributed ledger networks can truly collaborate and operate together.

Practical Applications Enabled by Technological Breakthroughs

The core of this breakthrough lies in the implementation of the Payment-versus-Payment (PvP) settlement mechanism. In simple terms, PvP ensures synchronized delivery of funds between both parties, eliminating the risk of one side having paid while the other’s funds are not yet available. Citibank and Swift integrated smart contracts, business process coordinators, and blockchain connectors to embed this mechanism into the existing Swift network infrastructure, significantly reducing technical implementation difficulty.

Ethereum Test Environment Validates Feasibility

The experiment was conducted on the Ethereum Sepolia testnet, using test USDC for simulated transactions. Choosing a setup close to a production environment indicates that this solution is quite mature and not far from real-world application scenarios. This approach transforms the interoperability between traditional banking systems and blockchain ecosystems from a theoretical concept into a verifiable technical solution.
