Trump Announces the United States Will Take Control of Venezuela and Introduces U.S. Corporate-Led Oil Industry Restoration
On January 4, the U.S. President Trump held a press conference at Mar-a-Lago in Florida, providing detailed explanations of the U.S. military operations against Venezuela and the arrest of its President Maduro.
Trump stated that this military operation, codenamed "Absolute Resolve," was unprecedented in scale, with over 150 aircraft dispatched from 20 bases, coordinated across air, land, and sea forces, to overwhelming suppress all Venezuelan military forces. He also said this was a rare raid since World War II and the most shocking display of U.S. military strength and combat capability.
Trump further disclosed that the operation targeted a military stronghold in downtown Caracas, with the core objective of capturing Maduro. During the operation, U.S. forces used technical means to cut power to most of Caracas. U.S. Delta Force special operations troops stormed Maduro’s residence at dawn, taking him and his wife from their bedroom on the spot. Currently, the Maduro couple has been detained aboard a U.S. military ship and will later be taken to New York to face American judicial proceedings on multiple charges.
Trump announced that the U.S. will take over subsequent affairs in Venezuela until the power transfer is complete. He emphasized that there is no fear of deploying ground troops and that a team has been assembled to handle the subsequent management of Venezuela.
He also outlined Venezuela’s economic plan under U.S. leadership, stating that Venezuela’s oil industry is deeply in decline. The U.S. will send its largest domestic oil company to settle in, planning to invest billions of dollars to repair the dilapidated local oil infrastructure.
He further stated that the U.S. will continue to impose a comprehensive embargo on Venezuela’s oil and that the U.S. will seek compensation from Venezuela’s oil production to offset its losses. As a result, Venezuela’s oil exports have been completely paralyzed due to political turmoil and lack of authorization.
However, the U.S. military action has also triggered strong condemnation and concerns from the international community. The UN Secretary-General said that the U.S. move seriously violates international law and the UN Charter, constitutes a blatant invasion of a country's sovereignty and territorial integrity, and could set a "dangerous precedent" for global security.
