There is a storage protocol worth paying attention to in the Sui ecosystem—Walrus Protocol. It is mainly designed for large file storage, such as AI datasets, NFT media, and game assets. Using erasure coding technology, data is dispersed across multiple nodes, reducing storage costs to a fraction of centralized cloud services. An interesting feature is its support for programmable storage, allowing data to directly interact with smart contracts on the Sui chain.

The WAL token plays a core role in this network—paying for storage fees, participating in node staking, and community governance voting all require it. Compared to Arweave and Filecoin, Walrus is more competitive in efficiency, cost control, and resistance to censorship. The project officially launched its mainnet in March 2025, and the entire ecosystem and application prospects look promising. Under the trend of AI and Web3 integration, infrastructure projects like this are definitely worth paying more attention to.

Erasure coding distributed storage has been played out, the key is whether it can truly be implemented and used effectively. Recently, Sui has indeed shown some potential; let's see how Walrus will attract users moving forward. Can the cost be reduced to a fraction? It sounds good, but the real benchmark is whether it can match cloud services when actually running. The idea of programmable storage is interesting; direct interaction with smart contracts eliminates middlemen. The WAL token price has increased quite well over the past two months, mainly due to market enthusiasm. Whether it can be sustained depends on the application volume.

Well, the erasure coding distributed storage approach is indeed effective, and the cost is much cheaper than centralized solutions. I agree with that. But I'm worried it might just be another case of hype without practical application. Infrastructure projects like these are often overestimated. Programmable storage sounds good, but are there really users? Or is it just another bunch of vaporware? It's a good thing that it has gone live on the mainnet, but there are too many lessons from history. Let's wait and see what user data says. WAL tokens are not a big issue; the key is whether there are real demanders in the ecosystem. Otherwise, it's just a speculative asset.

The name walrus is a bit interesting haha --- Erasure coding distributed storage, how much does the cost drop to? This logic sounds very appealing --- Programmable storage directly connected to on-chain contracts, it would be amazing if it can really run smoothly --- Another project launched in March, this timing is a bit sensitive --- Compared to Filecoin and Arweave, with such a significant cost advantage, why did it only go live on the mainnet in March? --- Storage of AI datasets is indeed a necessity, finally someone wants to solve this problem --- Staking mining is back again, be cautious everyone --- The speed of infrastructure completion in the Sui ecosystem is really fast, quite impressive --- The claim that costs are reduced to a fraction is a bit exaggerated, what about the details? --- Experts, come in and explain WAL's inflation mechanism --- This selling point of programmable storage is the first time I’ve heard of it, quite fresh

Erasure coding distributed storage has already been tried by Filecoin. Is it true that Walrus can be several times cheaper?

Walrus is really low-cost to the point of being ridiculous. Compared to the complicated setup of Filecoin, this approach is more straightforward. I need to think more about programmable storage. It would be interesting if it could directly interact with smart contracts. The mainnet is live, but it still depends on how the ecosystem follows up.

Damn, what's the cost of this thing? Feels like we're about to get cut again...

I've been following Walrus for a while. The erasure coding distributed storage system is indeed less complex than Filecoin. But to be honest, the storage race is very competitive. How many can really survive? In the file storage sector, it still depends on whether the application ecosystem can keep up; otherwise, no matter how cheap it is, no one will use it.
