On-chain data shows abnormal signals. According to Glassnode’s monitoring, the usage share of Taproot output types in the Bitcoin ecosystem is rapidly shrinking—from a peak of 42% at the beginning of 2024 down to around 20% currently.
This phenomenon is somewhat strange. As Bitcoin’s latest output format, Taproot was expected to be continuously adopted by the market, but instead, it is facing a “disuse trend.”
Quantum Security Anxiety is Spreading
Analyst Willy Woo pointed out a key observation: this may be the first time in history that the latest technical standard is actively losing market share among users. The culprit points to the threat of quantum computing.
There are voices suggesting that, compared to the older SegWit and Legacy address formats, Taproot has weaker defenses against quantum attacks and higher exposure risks. These concerns are prompting users to reconsider their address choices.
Users’ Insurance Options
More and more Bitcoin holders are beginning to prefer traditional SegWit and Legacy addresses, viewing them as safer havens. Willy Woo has also publicly recommended that, to address the potential threats of the quantum computing era, users should proactively migrate to SegWit addresses.
Behind this migration wave reflects the community’s deep consideration of long-term asset security—even if new technologies are functionally superior, security concerns are enough to change user behavior.
