The platform democratized AI-powered character roleplay, allowing users to build and interact with chatbots modeled on fictional or real personalities. The Character.AI-Google settlement, alongside mounting litigation against OpenAI and intensified FTC attention, marks the end of the light-touch governance era for consumer chatbots.
