In his essay titled “Balance of Power,” Buterin argues that the fundamental challenge isn’t whether crypto can be decentralized, but whether it can prevent that decentralization from collapsing under the weight of its own success.

Lido operates through a distributed DAO with multiple independent operators rather than functioning as a unified actor. More critically, governance mechanisms allow staked ETH holders to challenge and veto major decisions. This structural constraint means that Lido’s scale hasn’t automatically translated into unilateral control—a distinction that’s subtle but crucial.
