Amazon Selects Kenya for First African Ground Station to Challenge Starlink

According to Barron's Weekly, Amazon has selected Kenya as the location for its first satellite ground station in Africa, a key step in building a competitor to SpaceX's Starlink service. The move comes as Amazon has deployed approximately 330 satellites to orbit and aims to expand its satellite internet network across Africa. Starlink currently leads the market with around 10,000 satellites and over 10 million users; in Q1 2026, Starlink generated $3.3 billion in revenue, up 32% year-over-year, with operating profit reaching $1.2 billion.
