Americans Lost $11 Billion to Crypto Scams in 2025, Kiosk Fraud Hit $389 Million

According to the FBI's Internet Crime Complaint Center, Americans reported losses totaling $11.366 billion to crypto scams in 2025, spanning 181,565 complaints and accounting for more than half of all internet-crime losses tracked that year. Kiosk-related fraud alone drove $389 million in losses across 13,460 complaints, up 58% year over year, with victims aged 60 and older suffering $257.4 million, roughly two-thirds of the kiosk fraud category.

In response, Spokane, Washington, became the largest U.S. city to ban all crypto ATMs after a unanimous vote in June 2025, followed by Spokane Valley in May 2026. Washington, D.C.'s attorney general sued Athena Bitcoin on September 8, 2025, alleging 93% of its early local transactions were fraud-related. The FBI's Operation Level Up prevented an estimated $225.9 million in losses during 2025.
