Anthropic CEO Has Only 1 Direct Report as AI Firm Adopts Co-Leadership Model with Sister as President

According to Bloomberg reporting on June 11, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei has just one direct report—his chief of staff Avital Balwit—as the AI company adopts an unconventional leadership structure. The model reflects a rare approach: Amodei focuses primarily on company culture, strategic vision, and macro-level discussions, while his sister Daniela Amodei, Anthropic's president, oversees daily operations and manages the executive team. This contrasts sharply with peers; OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has approximately six direct reports, while Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang has around 60.

Dario, who previously served as VP of Research at OpenAI before founding Anthropic in 2021, stated the arrangement is "incredibly liberating," allowing him to spend roughly half his time on company culture discussions. Daniela brings deeper operational expertise from her earlier roles at Stripe and OpenAI's safety and policy team.
