According to Arkham’s latest report released on May 8, the top 10 wealthiest on-chain cryptocurrency holders in 2026 were identified based on public blockchain data. Satoshi Nakamoto remains the undisputed leader with approximately $89 billion in Bitcoin holdings, all derived from mining between 2009 and 2010 across roughly 22,000 addresses, placing him within the top 25 global wealth rankings.
The report highlighted several tragic cases of lost private keys: James Howells, a Welsh IT worker, holds approximately $650 million in 8,000 BTC mined in 2010 but inaccessible due to a discarded hard drive containing his private keys now buried in a landfill. Rain Lohmus, an Estonian banker, holds $589 million in 250,000 ETH from a 2014 ICO investment but cannot access the funds due to lost private keys. Stefan Thomas, an early Bitcoin developer, holds $569 million in 7,002 BTC stored in an IronKey hardware wallet but has only two remaining password attempts before permanent data erasure.
