Arup Finance Employee Loses $25 Million to AI Deepfake Video Conference Scam

According to Resemble AI's latest report on AI-generated fraud, an Arup finance employee authorized wire transfers totaling approximately $25 million after joining a video meeting where nearly all participants were AI-generated deepfakes, including the company's chief financial officer and colleagues.

Gartner research cited in the report found that 62% of organizations experienced deepfake attacks in the past 12 months, with the FBI estimating AI-enabled scams generated around $893 million in reported losses during 2025. The Arup incident has become a defining case study illustrating how synthetic media bypasses traditional security controls by exploiting human trust rather than technical vulnerabilities.
