Barclays Shifts Bonus-Heavy Pay Model; Performance Costs Hit £1.3B, Up 30%

According to CFO Anna Cross, Barclays shifted its compensation structure on Tuesday, moving toward Wall Street's model with higher variable bonuses and lower fixed salaries for bankers. The bank paid £1.3 billion ($1.7 billion) in performance costs in the first half of 2026, up nearly 30% from approximately £1 billion in the same period last year. In the same period, employee base salaries increased by less than 1%.
