Chainalysis Proposes 'Address Clustering Ontology' to Standardize On-Chain Tracing Methods for Law Enforcement

According to ChainCatcher, blockchain analysis firm Chainalysis released a new methodology proposal to establish unified on-chain fund tracking standards for law enforcement and investigators. The framework, formulated as an ontology, systematically breaks down the "cluster" concept by defining wallet segments and functional roles across two layers: transaction graph structure and inference confidence assessment. Chainalysis stated the framework aims to enhance interpretability and legal applicability of on-chain forensics, based on its practical experience with U.S. Department of Justice cases, including the Bitcoin Fog mixer case. Chief Scientist Jacob Illum noted the proposal answers "on what evidence basis can these addresses be attributed to the same entity," while emphasizing on-chain analysis alone cannot directly identify end users without combining centralized exchange legal investigations. The company is opening the proposal for industry discussion to advance standardized technical norms for enforcement and compliance.
