ETF Father Warns Against Single-Stock Leveraged ETFs; SK Hynix Falls 17.9% While Leveraged Product Drops 47.5%

According to Economist, Bae Jae-kyou, CEO of Korea Investment Trust Management and widely regarded as the 'father of ETFs' in South Korea, publicly warned on July 20 to halt investment in single-stock leveraged and inverse ETFs, citing heightened volatility risks. He later deleted the post. Leveraged ETFs track daily returns multiples rather than cumulative returns over a period, creating a 'negative compounding' effect when underlying assets experience significant price swings. Data from May 27 to July 16 illustrates the issue: SK Hynix stock fell 17.9%, while the corresponding single-stock leveraged ETF declined 47.5%—exceeding simple 2x calculation (35.8%) by 11.7 percentage points. Korea Investment Trust Management operates ACE Samsung Electronics and ACE SK Hynix leveraged products; Bae recommended halting investment in his own company's offerings.
