Frontier Airlines announced Tuesday it will debut in-flight Wi-Fi service in early 2027 using SpaceX's Starlink satellite internet. The budget carrier joins four other airlines—Mexico's Volaris, European carrier Wizz, Chile's Jetsmart, and the Philippines' Cebu Pacific—in the partnership, representing over 1,000 planes combined. Frontier's first Starlink-equipped Airbus aircraft will roll out in early 2027, marking the airline's entry into in-flight connectivity after being one of the last U.S. holdouts. The move comes as budget carriers face pressure to add premium amenities while competing with major airlines that have posted revenue growth from enhanced cabin services.

Five Budget Carriers Partner with Starlink for In-Flight Wi-Fi

The five airlines in the Starlink agreement all share private equity firm Indigo Partners as an investor, led by airline investor Bill Franke. CNBC reported in 2022 that Frontier was in talks with Starlink to add its first in-flight Wi-Fi service. A Frontier spokeswoman declined to say whether flyers could use the service for free. Former CEO Barry Biffle previously said the airline was hesitant to add weight to its planes with the equipment needed for the service. The airlines declined to disclose the terms of the agreements, and SpaceX did not immediately comment.

Starlink Expands Airline Partnerships to Over 40 Carriers

Starlink, part of Elon Musk's SpaceX, has signed deals with more than 40 carriers around the world, including United Airlines and American Airlines. Major airlines that have signed deals with Starlink have been offering Wi-Fi complimentary for loyalty program members. Airlines are ramping up in-flight services as customers grow to expect at-home-quality internet in the sky.

Frontier Airlines Adds Premium Services Amid Industry Shift

Budget carriers have been under pressure to go upmarket as larger rivals post revenue growth from the front of the cabin, upending discounters' once-profitable model of no-frills seating and amenities. Frontier is planning to debut first-class seats next year.
