Germany Raises Defense Spending to One-Third of Federal Budget by 2030, Approves 2027 Plan on July 6

According to Germany's Finance Ministry, Chancellor Friedrich Merz's cabinet approved on July 6 a 2027 budget proposal and fiscal framework through 2030, raising defense and security spending above 200 billion euros (approximately $228 billion) annually by decade's end. Defense spending will exceed 150 billion euros in 2027 and increase to over 190 billion euros by 2030, including military aid to Ukraine for defending against Russian invasion.

The spending will represent approximately one-third of Germany's federal budget, reflecting strengthened military capability as Europe's largest economy fortifies its armed forces.
