Ghana to Cut Mining Lease Renewal Terms to 10 Years From 30 Years

GFI-0.34%
According to Bloomberg, Ghana is preparing to significantly shorten mining lease renewal periods to a maximum of 10 years from the current 30 years, with the legislative proposal expected to be submitted to parliament within weeks. The cabinet has already approved the mining law overhaul, marking the first major revision since 2006. The change could affect companies like South Africa-based Gold Fields, whose Tarkwa mine in Ghana produced 475,000 ounces of gold in 2025, representing about one-fifth of the company's total output.
