GitHub Copilot Switches to Token-Based Billing on June 1, User Monthly Bills Surge from $45 to $754

On June 1, GitHub Copilot officially switched from per-request billing to token-based pricing, causing heavy users' monthly bills to skyrocket. Some users saw charges jump from approximately $45 to over $750, with one reporting a projected bill of $847.

Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong predicted that 80% of AI workloads will migrate to models costing 99% less within 12 to 18 months, as cheaper alternatives become viable. Energy and compute resources, not model capability, will become the true bottleneck, Armstrong noted.
