Google Launches $15 Billion AI Hub in India with Gigawatt-Scale Data Center

Gate News message, April 28 — Google held a groundbreaking ceremony on April 28 for its largest AI hub outside the United States, located in Visakhapatnam, India. The gigawatt-scale data center will support computing for products including Gemini and Search, according to Bikash Koley, vice president at Google. The project follows a $15 billion investment plan announced in October 2025.

Andhra Pradesh government backed the project with incentives worth 220 billion rupees ($2.33 billion), including 495 acres of land at a reduced price and a 15-year power discount. Google is partnering with AdaniConneX, a data center joint venture, on the campus development. Bharti Airtel, one of India’s largest telecom operators, will build new international subsea cable gateways and fiber links to strengthen the region’s digital infrastructure.

The gigawatt-scale facility will consume approximately half of Mumbai’s annual electricity demand. Alphabet expects capital expenditure of $175 billion to $185 billion in 2026, with much tied to AI infrastructure investments. Across the sector, data center spending is forecast to exceed $1 trillion in 2026 as AI hardware demand continues rising. The project aligns with India’s national AI development program and may reshape Andhra Pradesh’s power market through new clean energy procurement and infrastructure development.
