According to Algorand Foundation, Hypercube and YTL Corporation launched the United Kingdom’s first blockchain-based water credit system on May 13, built on the Algorand network. The initiative converts treated wastewater into tokenized digital credits, with each cubic meter of recycled water generating one verified environmental asset. The system is connected to wastewater recycling operations serving approximately 2.9 million people through Wessex Water’s facility in Bristol. Under the framework, businesses can purchase verified water credits to offset water consumption while supporting environmental restoration programs, including wetland restoration and river improvement projects in the Bristol region. Every transaction receives immutable blockchain verification, addressing transparency concerns in traditional environmental credit markets.
