Japan's Government Debt Hits Record 1.34 Quadrillion Yen as of End-March 2026, Up 10th Consecutive Year

According to Japan’s Ministry of Finance, as of end-March 2026, Japan’s total government debt reached 1.34 quadrillion yen, up 20.13 trillion yen year-over-year and marking a record high for the 10th consecutive year. Government bonds totaled 1.21 quadrillion yen, with ordinary bonds accounting for 1.10 quadrillion yen, an increase of 24.56 trillion yen.
