According to CNBC, Meta is laying off approximately 8,000 employees, representing about 10% of its workforce, this week, while also canceling 6,000 open positions. The company stated the cuts are part of efforts to improve operational efficiency and offset costs from investments in other areas.
The layoffs come as Meta significantly increases artificial intelligence spending. The company raised its 2026 capital expenditure guidance by up to $10 billion to a maximum of $145 billion. According to Layoffs.fyi data, 137 tech companies have collectively laid off nearly 110,000 workers year-to-date in 2026, compared to approximately 125,000 layoffs across the entire tech industry in 2025.
