MIT Scholar Recognizes Bank of Korea as Leading Innovation Institution in Programmable Ledger Today

According to MIT economics professor Robert Townsend, speaking at the 2026 BOK Conference in Seoul today, the Bank of Korea is "a leading innovation institution" in the programmable ledger field. Townsend praised the bank's integration of retail and wholesale central bank digital currencies (CBDCs) through distributed ledger technology. He highlighted the programmability features enabling smart contracts for functions such as voucher distribution, public service initiatives, and electric vehicle subsidy payments, distinguishing these capabilities from stablecoins by their ability to embed rights within digital assets through code-based conditions.
